Chapter 29

“ Look out!” Crystal shoves me out of the way.

Large pieces of rubble fly through the air. My body slides against the grass as my head thrashes back. Crystal conjures a tall sheet of ice from the ground, shielding her from the impact.

The pieces barely miss.

The blunt force of the rocks crack her barrier. There’s a ringing in my ears. I stagger to my feet as my eyes dart over to the hole created by the explosion. Six snarling larkins push their way through, picking up enormous pieces of rubble and tossing them out of their way like tiny pebbles. A being who I can only assume is their commander sits astride a dark mare between the broken wall. This beast is slender with yellow eyes that contrast the wisps of smoke swirling around his charred skin. His eyes skim over the landscape until they land on me. My lips curl into a snarl.

With a deep, guttural voice, the commander raises his spear and points it in my direction. “Retrieve the princess!” His eyes bore into mine, smiling with a mouth full of decayed teeth.

My adrenaline spikes. Of all the things that could come for me, why them? I have no weapons, only my dagger sheathed at my thigh and a power I can barely summon. My mind flashes back to the moment the larkin’s hands wrapped tightly around my throat. I was close to death, tasting the last bit of life on my tongue. I was barely able to fight off one outside the White Forest. How the fuck am I supposed to fight off six?

The ringing in my ears subsides. Able or not, the larkins are all headed my way. I don’t have time to think about how. We only have seconds to act, and I need my weapon.

“Cover me!” I shout to Crystal as I dash over to the horses. I can hear shards of ice hitting the air, metal clanging together, and the beasts’ grotesque sounds. I quickly turn around. Crystal is managing to hold them off, but she’s being surrounded.

I pick up speed, running faster than I ever thought I could toward Cirrus, all those early morning jogs paying off. As I approach, he rears back, letting me know I’m being followed.

I untie the reins from the tree. “I’ll keep them away from you, Cirrus, but don’t run too far.” I slap him on his hip. He takes off, and Crystal’s horse follows. I unsheathe Callian’s sword.

I whirl around to see a larkin standing twenty feet away. The skin around his knuckles crack as he clenches a sharp dagger in each hand. He’s much bigger than the one I killed outside the White Forest, well over six feet tall. A growl ripples from his chest. I want to hurl from the smell already assaulting my nose but don’t have time to linger on the thought as the larkin launches a dagger my way. I drop to the ground, feeling the air whip above my head as the blade zooms past.
